|

I picked up a B16 from Chris as a spare time project. I'm having a difficult time deciding what to do with it. I don't think I want to go all out N/A or boost. I'm leaning towards a mild build that will be good for a daily driver and will be satisfying when I get the urge to open up the taps. The stock B16 is pretty anemic. I would like to hit the 180 hp mark at the flywheel. I'm using the stock pr3 ecu with a VAFC2. The rev limiter is 8200 rpm. So an agressive set of cams are out of the question. Are regrind cams any good? I've got Buddy Club 3+ but the rev limiter is too low for them. I'm on a pretty tight budget but I'm not going to ebay this engine! I want to do it right the first time.
This is some of what I've been thinking:
.25mm over PCT pistons
Arp rod and head studs
Balanced rotating assembly... is this necessary on a B16?
Upgraded main and rod bearings... unsure what brand
Maybe GSR cams?
4-2-1 Header... but what brand? Remember the budget!!!
Any and all suggestions are welcome. Even post just for the sake of bullshitting about VTEC . _________________ VTEC is an addiction I have to live with everyday. |

i did a lotta research past little while, i was gonna do the same, but if you doing cams, then you need IM (intake manifold) TB (throttle body) defenetly headers, and maybe add on to you computer to set the rev limiter little higher. but you would defiantly lose the low end and might sacrifice some midrange.
starting with headers and if you wanna do cams, one of the one out there is skunk2 stage1, u can keep you valve train and rav limiter, anything else you gotta do alot more work. also toda Aclass (i think thats what it's called) or the A's anyways, would next thing, but you gonna need cam gear and springs _________________

I had a skunk2 pro IM and edelbrock TB. I lost all power up to 6000 rpm. It was horrible. I had it running with an AEM EMS but there was no getting the low end loss back. It pulled like hell from 6-8.5k but the driveability was hard to live with. I tried with with buddy club cams and stock ones. The stock IM dominates up to 7000 rpm from my experience. I want to retain as much low end torque as possible. I spent almost 2 years messing around with IM, cams, and computers. I was not impressed with the Skunk2 IM. They claim it will improve power throughout the powerband but it really doesn't.
I have heard many people rave about the Skunk2 stage 1 cams as well as the toda A's. The problem is $$$. I have very little of it . I think the IM is only necessary if you want to make power past 8000 rpm. I'm happy with the stock powerband, I just want it to be stronger. I have a friend who was thinking of putting cams in his GSR. If I can lay my hands on his stock ones I know they would be very cheap. The B16 cams are weak. And my buddy Club's don't have the powerband I'm after. I hear people say they are torquey midrange cams but they feel more like a top end cam to me.
Someone told me about megan racing headers. I'm going to assume they're junk. Has anyone had experience with cheap headers of any brand? I really can't afford to get a hytech or toda header. Good bang for buck is what I'm after.
Should I have the head ported? And is it even possible to make a 180 flywheel hp B16 with GSR cams?
Thanks for your help. I'm really not trying to argue about the IM! I just had a shitty time with mine. I do appreciate your input. _________________ VTEC is an addiction I have to live with everyday. |
